Obituary

Virgil Rank, age 93, passed away early the morning of Wednesday, 25 March, 2026, joining his beloved wife, Ruth Rank, in eternal life. They were married for 59 years, before she passed.

Virgil was father to David (Louise) and Nancy (John). He had three grandchildren: Kristina (Kyle), Monica (Robert) and Joaquin. He had four great-grandchildren: Madeline, Sophie, Cameron and Zoey. He was always interested in what they all were doing.

Virgil is preceded in death by his parents, Harold E. and Alice, and his siblings, Harold A. (Verna, living) and Virginia (Robert).

Virgil was born in York, Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He had a brief stint in the U.S. Army. He worked for Conoco Inc. (now ConocoPhillips) for 32 years – a job that took him and the family to many places they would call home. It started in Colorado, then Wyoming, California, New Jersey, Connecticut, Norway, the Netherlands and Dubai, UAE. He and Ruth retired to Englewood, Florida, then Oro Valley, Arizona. In October 2024, Virgil moved to Dickson Hollow, in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.

Virgil was always active in various sports with favorites being volleyball, basketball and waterskiing. He loved to travel, often by road (but also planes and boats), and would read maps like others read books. If there was a historical plaque along the way, he would stop to read it. He enjoyed photography and captured the beauty of the many places he lived and visited. He and Ruthie started square dancing in Norway and continued in the Netherlands and then again in Arizona. They were always active in their churches and usually sang in the choirs. They also participated in community theater productions and even had a singing group for a short time (in Connecticut), called Rank & File. Virgil enjoyed building practical things (usually from wood) and reading narrative histories. He went deep into the family’s genealogy.

Virgil’s faith was part of his life all the way through. He was always courteous and treated people with respect, was punctual, upright, steadfast, hardworking and honest. He deeply respected his parents and loved his siblings and extended family. When someone needed help, he was always willing to help out however he could.

There will be a brief time of gathering and visiting prior to a memorial service. On Sunday, March 29, 2026, the visiting time will start at 2:00pm and the service will start at 3:00pm (all Central time zone). The location is Living Hope Presbyterian Church, W156N4881 Pilgrim Rd, Menomonee Falls, WI 53051.
