Monroe Stuart Meier, 82, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026.

Monroe was born on January 5, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, the only child of Bernard J. Meier and Ruthadele (Gilberg) Meier. He grew up in Chicago and graduated from North Park Academy in 1961 before attending and graduating from the University of Chicago. Over the years, Monroe also made his home in Milwaukee, Cedarburg, Menomonee Falls, and Brown Deer, Wisconsin, before spending his final year in Delafield with family.

Activity was a constant throughout Monroe’s life. As a young man, he was an internationally competitive figure skater and later spent time coaching the sport. His professional life included teaching with Milwaukee Public Schools and a career in insurance, including work with Sentry Insurance and Mid-State Insurance.

Monroe was perhaps most himself when he was busy. He loved being active and social and was always interested in trying, learning, discussing, or doing something. Golf, tennis, pickleball, ping pong, sailing, and recreational baseball all found a place in his life. He enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie he found through the YMCA, the Vagabonds ski and social club, and his Boys of Summer baseball team.

Monroe was inquisitive and appreciated intelligent conversation. He was also a serial DIYer, seemingly always with something to work on, figure out, or fix. Those who knew him will remember his distinctive “Monroisms”—his fondness for linguistic wordplay, malaphors, and his own interpretations of familiar expressions. They may also remember his appreciation for a good dive-y Asian restaurant and his habit of ending the day with chocolate ice cream.

Monroe and his former wife, Cheryl Eskridge, raised two sons, Nicholas and Bradley. As a grandfather, his natural curiosity carried into the time he spent with his grandchildren. He enjoyed reading to them and teaching them about science, sharing with another generation his interest in learning and understanding how things worked.

Monroe is survived by his sons, Nicholas (Lucinda) Meier of Delafield and their children, Zoey, Nora, and Etta; and Bradley (Jacci) Meier of Monona and their children, Leigh and Arlo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Ruthadele Meier.

Monroe lived a life that was rarely still—filled with activity, conversation, curiosity, projects, sports, friendships, and family. Those who knew him will remember a man who liked to stay engaged with both the people and the world around him.
