Kari Lynn (Soderberg) Hicken, 64, of Waukesha, WI, peacefully passed away on July 20, 2026, after a long and courageous journey with lung cancer. In navigating her cancer diagnosis, she faced every challenge with unwavering determination, remarkable strength, and grace, giving everything she had while inspiring all who knew and loved her. Kari was born in West Allis, WI, on December 30, 1961, to Roland and Mary (Koessl) Soderberg. She grew up in Waukesha, WI, and graduated from Waukesha North High School.

Kari was known for her unwavering love for her family, her incredible strength, and her quick wit— she loved teasing those she cared about with her signature sarcasm. She had a stubborn determination that carried her through life’s greatest challenges and a contagious sense of humor that could bring laughter even during the hardest times.

She found happiness in life's simple pleasures. Kari loved the color purple, enjoyed cheering on the Green Bay Packers, watching NASCAR, visiting Door County—especially Sister Bay—decorating her home in farmhouse style, collecting antiques and canning jars, and spending time with her beloved kitties, Oliver & Winston, who brought her endless comfort and companionship. Kari was an avid upcycler/repurposer who enjoyed transforming discarded items into functional treasures. She also had a special place in her heart for animals, a compassion she carried from her years working at a veterinary clinic.

Above all, Kari loved time spent with family and friends, and especially cherished being a mom and grandma. Her granddaughters even nicknamed her ‘Grandma with the Kitties’. She treasured every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and loved ones, creating memories filled with laughter, love, and togetherness. She rarely missed a school concert, dance recital, holiday parade, or any special event involving her children or grandchildren, as being present for the people she loved was one of her greatest joys. Those who knew Kari will remember her for her fierce love, selfless devotion to her family, resilient spirit, infectious laughter, and the joy she brought to everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Even throughout her courageous journey with lung cancer, she never lost her ability to make others laugh. Her nurses and medical team at the ProHealth Care Cancer Center looked forward to seeing her, and over time they became like a second family. Her sense of humor and playful sarcasm could brighten any room, and even during cancer treatments she had the nurses laughing right alongside her, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Kari is survived by her children, Katie (Corey Butler) Taylor, Cody Hicken, Christian (Noelle) Hicken; grandchildren, Savannah and Caydence (and Carmen, Chloe, Ciara, and Charlotte); dear cats, Winston & Oliver; and mother, Mary. Kari is also survived by her sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephew, and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved father, Roland Soderberg; stepfather, Richard Conger; and brother-in-law, Andy Bourdo.

A private celebration of life will be held for immediate family at a later date. The family is deeply grateful for the love and support they have received. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made through the family's GoFundMe to help with medical and funeral expenses and would be sincerely appreciated.
