Karen Katherine Johnson (née VanderLeest), of Brookfield, WI, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 29, 2025, at the age of 80, after a nearly six-year battle with cancer. She faced her illness with strength, grace, and an unshakable spirit.
Born in Milwaukee, WI, on March 29, 1945, Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Katie (née Vlasity) and John VanderLeest, and her sister and best friend, Linda, and brother in law, Ronald Reagan.
Karen was married for over 25 years to her beloved husband, Robert "Bob" Johnson, whom she had known since grade school. Bob survived Karen for only five days before joining her in eternal life, a true testament to their bond. Karen is survived by her three children: Tracey Listle, Tim (Cindy) Young, and Jennifer (Brian) Engling; and four stepchildren: Wendy (Robb) Williams, Robert (Tracy) Johnson, Jr., Joelle (Claudio) Lanza, and Christina (Dan Koenig) Johnson. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and thirty-seven great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy into her life.
Family was at the center of Karen’s life. She especially adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, never missing a chance to cheer them on at games, band performances, or chorus concerts. Nothing made her happier than being with family. Karen was present for her loved ones, quick to lend a hand, leading by example, and always doing things the right way. She faced hard challenges and made them look easy. Karen’s life was a beautiful example of love, perseverance, and kindness. She will be remembered always and missed dearly.
Private celebration of life to be held in November.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to the Wisconsin Humane Society or any animal rescue shelter, honoring Karen’s lifelong love of animals, especially dogs.
Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to nurse Andrea and the dedicated team of caregivers for their compassionate care.
