David J Berge, born on December 24, 1940, lived a full and meaningful 85 years, touching countless lives through his kindness, wisdom, humor, and unwavering devotion to his family.
He started his career at Minnesota State University, Mankato, MN (1964-1970), moved on to Purdue University as Associate Director (1970-1984), and completed his career at University of Wisconsin Madison as Director of Recreational Sports from 1984-2002.He married Jan Thomas on August 18, 1962.
He was devoted to his wife, Jan, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage- a partnership grounded in love, loyalty, and enduring commitment. Together they raised four tremendous children and took great pride in the family they built: Eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who knew him lovingly as “Bumpa,” a name reflecting the warmth, strength, and steady devotion he brought to his family.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; daughter, Bekki (Keith) and their daughters, Sara and Emily; his son, Marc (Karlin) and his grandchildren, Alexandra (Jeremy) and their children: Davis, Louisa, and Xander; McKenzie (fiancé, Logan) and their son, Hayes; his son, Chad and his children, Jack and Morgan; and his son, Broc and his daughters, Charli and Reese.
He will be remembered as Bumpa, a man whose love shaped a family that will carry his spirit forward. His presence will be deeply missed, but his influence lives on in the generations he helped shape.
A Funeral Service for David Berge will be held on May 22, 2026, from 3:00-5:00 at Bethel Church in Madison, WI.
