It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Bernadine “Bernie” R. Kaatz, who left us peacefully on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the age of 91, surrounded by her family.
Bernadine’s life was a true testament to kindness, wisdom, and an unwavering devotion to her family and friends.
Born on January 8, 1934, she was the cherished mother of Kathryn George, Lora (Martin) Wilson, Daniel (Susan) Kaatz, and Susan (Jeff) Haufschild. She was a proud grandmother to Amanda (Ryan) Hill, Adam (Liana) Kaatz, Marcus Haufschild, and Maxwell Haufschild, and was blessed with three great-grandchildren: Ady and Trevor Hill, and Piper Kaatz.
Bernadine pursued her love of learning at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. A lifelong reader, she found joy, inspiration, and comfort in books throughout her life.
As a widow, Bernadine navigated life’s joys and challenges with grace and strength, always guided by her deep love for family and her belief in the importance of connection. In her final days, she was surrounded by those she loved most, held in the warmth of their care.
She will be remembered for her wisdom, gentle spirit, strength, and, of course, her impeccable sense of style. Her legacy of love, compassion, and intellectual curiosity will continue to inspire all who knew her.
In accordance with Bernadine’s wishes, no formal service will be held. Her family will gather privately to celebrate her life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bernadine’s name to the Pauline Haas Public Library Foundation, a place that reflects her lifelong love of reading:
